a pair of socks for Jon

socks for a holiday stocking
My kids and I decided that Jon’s stocking needs a bit of spiffing up this year. My contribution is going to be a pair of socks with my dyed yarns. They are, from left to right: (bottom) madder, st john’s wort late summer + iron, st john’s wort late spring + iron; {middle) st john’s wort late summer, tansy + iron; and (top) st john’s wort late spring.

toes!
I knit my paired objects, like mittens and socks, in tandem rather than sequentially, as I tend to get more confident as I go and my knitting gets tighter and the second item is almost invariably smaller than the first. So I work a few inches on one and then switch to the other. I’ll start the stripes on what will be the bottom of the socks so that the color joins won’t be overly noticeable.

moving along
Turns out I’m only feeling the greens and browns, so I’m going with that.

Heels done
Jon’s socks always look huge while I’m knitting them. But now I’m close - I just need 40 or so rows on the ankle part and then I can make the ribbing.

bottoms up
I haven’t worried about color jogs, as they are all going to be on the bottom of the sock. The ones up the back will be more noticeable, but I’m not going to worry about them, either. There are more important things to worry about.

all done
They still look gargantuan to me, but I matched them up against some of his other socks, and they are the same size.
