dyeing with aster
-
wild aster?
That is what I’m calling these opportunists. Last summer they made a grab for my backyard and very nearly succeeded. They’re so pretty, I didn’t have the heart to eradicate them.
-
with a worsted weight yarn
The plant gives a lovely soft yellow color.
-
with mordant
After sitting for about five minutes in an iron-mordant bath, the yarn turns green, hooray.

Here they are in baby form
It is May 15. The plants look small and meek right now, but in a couple of months they will be muscling their way through the yard. I’ll be ready with my pruner and dye pot.

Getting ready
It is June 5 and they are about to bloom. I'll get ready myself, by scouring and mordanting my wool.

blooming!
They are all over the yard again, so I have plenty of dyestuff. I tend to use a 1:1 ratio of dyestuff to fiber, but I have so much of this plant, I'll probably make it closer to 2:1.
